The Story Behind MahBlend
I grew up watching my grandparents play mahjong.
Every Sunday, the four of them would settle around a folding table in my grandmother’s apartment in Suzhou — the kind of table with a green felt top worn smooth from years of use. I’d sit nearby doing homework, or pretending to, and listen to the sound I’ve loved my whole life: the shuffle and click of tiles being mixed before a game. That sound still means something to me. It means family. It means Sunday afternoons that seemed to stretch on forever in the best possible way.
Mahjong wasn’t entertainment in my house. It was ritual.
When I moved to the United States, I assumed I’d find that same love of the game here. And I did — American Mahjong has its own beautiful tradition, with millions of players who feel exactly the way I do: that something important happens when four people sit down together with a set of tiles. The game slows you down. It makes you present. It’s one of the few things in modern life that genuinely demands your full attention — and rewards it.
But the first time I looked for a set to buy as a gift, I was stopped cold.
Here’s what the mahjong kit market looked like:
On one end: $30 Amazon sets in thin plastic cases. Hollow tiles that rattle. Colors that fade. Racks that warp. Sets that feel like an afterthought — because they are.
On the other end: $400 designer sets with prices that made the game feel exclusive, like something only for people who’d already arrived.
Nothing in between. Nothing that said: this is a serious, beautiful set, made to last, priced so that real people can actually buy it — for themselves, for a friend’s birthday, as a holiday gift.
That gap bothered me for a long time.
In 2024, I decided to do something about it.
50 sets evaluated. 10 made the cut.
I didn’t want to build a brand around a single set and hope it worked. I wanted to do what I’d been trained to do professionally: evaluate suppliers, assess quality rigorously, and only bring forward what genuinely meets the standard.
So that’s what I did.
Over the course of a year, I evaluated more than 50 tile kits from artisan workshops across Asia. Most didn’t make the cut. Here’s what I was looking for — and what I’m still looking for every time a new set comes through:
Material Weight
A quality American Mahjong tile should have presence in your hand. Our sets use 4-layer acrylic construction — denser and more durable than the single-layer plastic used in budget sets. Pick one up and you’ll feel the difference immediately.
Engraving Depth
Laser engraving should be deep enough that you can feel the suit markings with your thumb, not just see them. Shallow engraving wears down. Deep engraving lasts. Every set I approve passes a touch test, not just a visual one.
Color Consistency
Within a set, every Dragon tile should be the same shade of red. Every Flower should match. I reject sets where the color drifts across the tiles — and it happens more than you’d think.
Hand-Feel
This one is harder to quantify but impossible to fake. A good tile has a smooth, slightly matte surface that doesn’t feel slippery or sticky. It should feel like something you’d want to hold for three hours. Because you will.
Color Story
Every set in our collection has a deliberate palette — something that looks good on a table, photographs beautifully, and tells a cohesive visual story. These aren’t random colors. They’re chosen.
The result: 10 sets that I’d be proud to give to my mother, my best friend, or anyone who loves this game.
My name is David Zhu.
